Pender County legislator to step down in mid-September
RALEIGH -- State Rep. Chris Millis, R-Pender, abruptly resigned from the N.C. House on Friday, saying he wants to spend more time with his family.
“It’s the best timing for myself and my family,” Millis said in an interview.
His resignation is effective Sept. 15, according to a letter Millis posted on his website.
The three-term Hampstead Republican won re-election last year by a wide margin. Millis and his wife, Tonya, have three small children.
“My wife, three children, parents, other immediate family, and my employer have sacrificed so much so I could serve in Raleigh,” Millis wrote in his letter. “Now is the time to prioritize my commitment to my wonderful wife Tonya and to our children Luke, Alexa, and Olivia.”
Millis said there are no extenuating reasons for his resignation.
“There are no other issues, no other aspects,” he said. “Everything is good on the homefront and I want to keep it that way.”
Millis’ decision comes shortly after the House approved new district maps that saw his 16th District redrawn to carve out Onslow County and include a portion of Columbus County.
Millis said his resignation “has absolutely nothing to do with redistricting whatsoever” and that, had he decided to continue serving, he would have enjoyed serving constituents in Columbus County.
‘He will be missed’
His resignation caught other members of the region’s delegation by surprise, including Rep. Holly Grange, R-New Hanover, who represents the district to Millis’ south.
“I’m shocked,” Grange said Friday.
